David Crawford shares sports medicine trends to watch out for in 2020

David Crawford, a sports medicine expert, understands that with the new decade just around the corner, many people are gearing up to set new fitness goals. He shares the newest fitness trends by the American College of Sports Medicine, from wearable tech to fitness programming, to health and wellness coaching.
Here are some of them:
·         Wearable sports technology

The newest wearable technology – which includes activity trackers, heart rate monitors, and devices that do both and so much more - offers sophisticated tools to accurately record daily steps, distance run, and calories burned. These wearable gadgets are also designed to support weight management efforts. It is important to set a daily step goal and use a basic activity tracker to monitor your progress, as it is a convenient way to get you to move more. 2020 will also see more heart rate-based monitors that sync with a watch or app, ideal for individuals seeking to enhance athletic performance.

·         HIIT

Although not exactly a new trend, high intensity interval training or HIIT, which uses repeated cycles of short exercise alternating with periods of rest, will continue to be huge in 2020. Sessions typically last less than 30 minutes, ideal for individuals who do not have a lot of time to spare for fitness. Although these exercises do not require a lot of time, they provide good results. It is also perfect for aging individuals who struggle with weight gain and are at a greater risk of age-associated muscle loss.

·         Body weight training

Going to the gym and investing in expensive exercise equipment may soon be a thing of the past – body weight training focuses on dynamic movements to build strength and endurance, using minimal equipment. This type of training can be done almost anywhere, which David Crawford says is a budget-friendly option for those who want to get fit without spending too much. You can even do these exercises at home using things you already have around the house.
